Voice Input for Claude Code

Claude Code has no voice input. Someone asked for it — a mic button built into the terminal UI that would invoke VS Code Speech. Anthropic closed the request. (Issue #1852)

But the extension works anyway.

The Setup

Install Microsoft’s free VS Code Speech extension. Map Voice: Start Dictation in Terminal to a hotkey — I use Ctrl+Option+V — and you’re talking to Claude Code. No GUI button, no deep integration. Just a hotkey. Works fine.

When It’s Worth It

For conversational prompts — describing what you want, explaining a bug, giving feedback — it’s noticeably faster, and I think more clearly out loud than through my fingers. For exact filenames and code, I still type. That’s maybe 20% of what I say to Claude.

I’m not paying for a dictation layer on top of what I’m already paying Anthropic. But if you’ve found a better free solution, I want to hear about it.
